Margaret Joy, Pittsburgh Family Law Attorney

Margaret Joy has been practicing family law for 40 years and co-founded McCarthy McEnroe Rosinski & Joy in 1993.  She has extensive experience in all aspects of family law and litigation, including the valuation of assets of all types, including closely-held business interests, all forms of executive compensation, including stock options, restricted stock and other equity awards, trusts and professional practices; forensic accounting for assets and income; all types of custody disputes including relocation; and pre- and post-nuptial agreements.  She has also acted as counsel for parties engaged in mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution for family law matters.  She has handled cases with marital estates in excess of $500,000,000 and has represented some of the most prominent families in the region.  She has litigated cases in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and all surrounding counties, and in all state courts of the Commonwealth, including the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

Ms. Joy is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a selective organization for the leading family law practitioners in the country.  She is a frequent lecturer and writer on topics related to family law, marital agreements, and the interplay between family law and such fields as estate planning and bankruptcy.   She is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Allegheny County Bar Associations, and the Family Law Section of each.  She has served on a variety of task forces involving emerging or changing family law issues, including paternity legislation and proposed support guideline reform.  She was honored in 2013 by Best Lawyers as the Lawyer of the Year in Pittsburgh for Family Law.

Ms. Joy is active in many community and nonprofit organizations.  She is a member of the Board of Directors of UPMC, a large hospital system in Western Pennsylvania; Past Chair of the Magee-Womens Research Institute and Foundation Board (the largest research facility in the world dedicated to women’s and infants’ health); a member of the Board of UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania; Chair of the Board of the Greater Pittsburgh YMCA; a Trustee of Eden Hall Foundation (a private foundation which makes grants to educational, cultural and health/human services nonprofits); and a member of the Board of Imani Christian Academy (an independent school for disadvantaged youth).  She is a member of the Executive Committee of the award-winning Women’s Leadership Initiative of the United Way of Allegheny County. Ms. Joy is a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh, a year-long leadership development program.  She was honored as the 2013 Woman of Distinction in the field of Law by the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania.

Ms. Joy graduated from Princeton University in 1974 (the second class to admit women), earning a degree in Psychology.  She obtained her law degree in 1978 from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
